“ECOWASTE4FOOD: Supporting eco-innovation to reduce food waste and promote a better resource efficient economy” is a project co-funded by the Interreg-Europe programme and aims at addressing the critical issue of food waste through the exchange of experiences, the improvement of regional policies and the promotion of ecological innovation in the project’s participating territories.
The ECOWASTE4FOOD project started on 1/1/2017 and will be completed on 31/12/2020. It brings together seven local and regional authorities from seven countries throughout Europe. Its ambition is to address the crucial issue of food waste, not only to stop an unacceptable situation causing the loss of up to 50% of the agricultural production which is not consumed or it is consumed in a wrong way in relation to health concerns, but also to demonstrate that food waste could be a resource efficient and environmentally friendly source for local economies. The local and regional authorities participating in the project have committed themselves to improve their own policies during the four years duration of the project, in particular by influencing or even by raising existing ERDF funds within their regional Operational programme 20142020 or equivalent programmes.
With respect to the Region of Western Macedonia, RDFWM will prepare a Regional Action Plan concerning the structural funds of the ROP in relation to Axis 3, which will combine two main goals of the programme:
- To transfer good practices of project partners in the formulation of policies while combining different funding tools;
- To promote entrepreneurship, especially through the facilitation of the financial exploitation of new ideas and the support of new businesses.
The Regional Action Plan will include actions in the frame of Measure 3a which combine the objectives of the project and the conclusions extracted from the regional food sector strategy of the smart specialization strategy (RIS3). These actions refer to the support and funding of SMEs for the implementation of investments relevant to the reduction of food waste and the promotion of ecological innovation in the respective sector and they will be completed until the end of the ECOWASTE4FOOD project.
