…The Technical Study and the Business Plan prepared in the framework of the LIFE-Asbestmine program examine the possibilities and conditions for the utilization of the MABE Asbestos mine in Kozani, as an asbestos waste disposal site.
The projects carried out during the pilot program included the remediation of areas containing scattered asbestos piles and the disposal of 300-tonnes of the asbestos materials that were solidified, in a selected location of the mine. This project was the first substantial step in the remediation of the asbestos-contaminated area.
The continuation of the remediation work will include, as a priority, the cleaning of the buildings from the asbestos found in them and in the machinery. More than 50,000 tons of asbestos remain in the building facilities. The application of the method implemented during the LIFE pilot program will offer a solution for the treatment and inactivation of this large amount of asbestos in buildings.
