Innovation is undoubtedly one of the most critical factors for the development of a business, especially in conditions of intense competition or crises. When this concept is put into practice by many businesses, the region in which they produce can only prosper. But how does an idea become a reality? In its context Strategic Smart Specialization (RIS3) of the Region of Western Macedonia and for highlighting the “smart” branches of the new Programming Period, the Western Macedonia RIS/RDF support structure is about to implement its first thematic workshops Business Discovery Process (BDP), which is the key tool of the Smart Specialization Strategy. The aim of the above is to identify the activities of the business sector that – by making use of Research, Technology and Innovation – can cause structural changes in businesses and improve their competitiveness, putting Western Macedonia on a development path. The success of the DEAs and consequently of the Smart Specialization Strategy, is based on the active participation and cooperation of businesses, the research community, public sector managers for the distribution of available resources, but also civil society in the form of collective representation.
